Studying for an exam can be one of the most stressful experiences, especially if they involve memorizing answers. One of the best ways of learning certain answers is to use flash cards. After reading and answering a question, you can flip the card and see if your answer is correct or not. This is what you can do with Mnemosyne. On the surface, it looks like a simple application, with basic functions, but this is where you would be wrong. The software uses an advanced algorithm to schedule and prioritize the cards which you are more likely to forget. Instead of wasting your time with answers that you already know, you can focus on items that are more difficult to remember.

The application is a research project regarding long-term memory. You can use Mnemosyne, free of charge, for as long as you want, without any restrictions. Instead of making a donation, you may contribute to the project by sharing your own cards, suggesting new features or contributing with code or a translation.

Using Mnemosyne is very easy. The user interface displays your questions one at a time and you may click a button to reveal the answer. Cards can be graded from 0 to 5. If you have not memorized a certain answer yet, you can grade it with 0 or 1. Depending on your grades, the application will display your cards with a higher or lower frequency. Low grade cards will appear more often than high grade cards, which can be scheduled for a later date.

Cards are created, one by one, on a separate window, which is similar to the main interface. You must type your questions and answers in different input fields and select an initial grade. Besides text, you can insert pictures, sounds, videos or Flash animations. Mnemosyne may display a card's front and back, in this order or vice versa. You can set the application to show only the front, before the back or to alternate these orders.

It is also possible to create vocabulary cards. You can type in a foreign word or expression as the question and write down the pronunciation and meaning as the answer. Mnemosyne allows you to view your entire cards database on a separate window. It displays your cards in a table of contents, along with numerous details. In addition, the application provides various statistics, on a tabbed window, regarding added and scheduled cards, grades and more.

Pros

You may create any number of flash cards and use them to memorize anything you want. You can insert text, images, sounds, videos or Flash animations on your cards. The application will display certain cards more often than others, depending on your grades.

Cons

If you insert pictures, you can not set the application to fit them on the interface. Mnemosyne can help you memorize any information, in a comfortable and efficient manner.
